Mumbai : Though the State government declared reservations for the Marathas and Muslims in haste, its implementation is now facing many hurdles. Governor K. Sankarnarayan’s notification released just a couple of weeks before the government’s decision will halt the implementation of the government order, at least in 7 tribal districts of the state.
In the notification issued on June 9, Governor has directed that to improve ‘service delivery’ of the government machinery in tribal area, all direct recruitment drives in such areas should be made from among eligible Scheduled Tribes candidates.
The Constitution has entrusted Governors with the responsibility of welfare of the scheduled tribes. They have special advisory bodies to advise them on such issues. The body advising Maharashtra governor had recommended that class 3 and 4 posts from the tribal areas be filled with local candidates of the scheduled tribes and Governor issued a notification in accordance to that.
The State government too has accepted Governor’s suggestion. Hence, 16% reservation for Marathas and 5% for Muslims won’t be implemented in parts or whole of Thane, Nashik, Nandurbar, Amravati, Yavatmal, Nagpur and Chandrapur districts. The state cabinet has resolved in this effect last week.
