Mumbai : he Kherwadi police have arrested one Gulzar Sayyed (30) for cheating people in ATMs using glue. Gulzar would apply glue on the ATM machine’s buttons, which would jam the pad of the machine. The accused was nabbed on Wednesday when he tried the same tactic at an SBI ATM near MIG club.
The crime came to light when a complainant went to withdraw money from the ATM. He tried to take out the money, but he failed to press the button and thus exited the kiosk. According to the police, within 10 seconds of him coming out, he received an SMS informing him that Rs 10,000 had been removed from his account.
According to the police, the victim immediately ran towards the ATM and saw a group running from the spot. Although Gulzar himself failed to escape policemen patrolling in the area, two of his companions managed to flee from the crime scene.
The accused used to apply glue on a particular number on the ATM keypad. Then, one of them would stand inside the kiosk to take a peek at the victim’s PIN, while pretending to be counting money. And once the customer would go out of the ATM, the accused would enter the PIN and withdrew cash.
According to the police, the accused purchased bikes with the money they withdrew from ATM machines. And the accused would target only those ATMs that did not have a watchman.
“Gulzar has been arrested under Section 420 of the IT Act. Two accused have been absconding and we are also finding out in what other areas they had committed the same crime. Gulzar has been sent to police custody till July 8,” said senior PI Sujata Patil of Kherwadi police station.
