Police will now approach the CBI to get an Interpol Red Corner notice issued in her name to facilitate quick deportation from Kenya.

Mumbai : In a major development, the Thane Police have named actress Mamta Kulkarni as a co-accused in the drug haul case and are now working on issuing a Red Corner Notice for her through the Interpol.

The Thane Police had seized nearly 20 tonnes of the ephedrine drug which is further used to make other compounds in April this year from a factory in Sholapur and had made several arrests in the case. The first tip was obtained when a Nigerian was arrested by the police and his interrogation led to the arrest of nine other persons and the seizure of a major quantity of drugs. The drug that was seized from the factory at Sholapur is valued at nearly Rs 2000 crore, sources said.

Further investigations by the police led them to the involvement of international drug smuggler Vicky Goswami, who is reported to be currently staying in Kenya along with his wife and well-known actress Mamta Kulkarni.

It was revealed that Goswami had played a key role in the drug racket and had planned to purchase the drug from the factory at Sholapur and sell it in the international market through a drug cartel.

According to Thane Police Commissioner, Paramvir Singh, the interrogation of some of the accused persons in this case has revealed that Kulkarni had also attended the meeting in Kenya along with Goswami where they had met with another drug smuggler by the name of Abdullah. “They had also planned to set up a factory at Mombasa in Kenya where they wanted to manufacture the drugs and sell them in some Eastern European countries and other places,” he revealed.

The police are also investigating her bank accounts and investments in her name, and are questioning her acquaintances in the country, sources said.

After putting her name in the FIR in the drug haul case, the police are in the process of issuing a red corner notice against Kulkarni and get her extradited to India. “This process will be done through the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which is the nodal agency for carrying out the process,” a senior official said. The Thane Police is also receiving inputs from the Drug Enforcement Agency of the US and from the Gujarat Police which also had made similar seizures in the past.

Charge sheets have already been filed against 10 people who have been arrested in this case so far in the local court. However, the police are still on the lookout for seven other accused persons in this case who are still absconding, sources said.
