Mumbai : A 73-year-old woman from Mahim became the 26th cadaver donor in the city by donating her kidneys, liver on the day of Organ Donation on Thursday.

The woman who was declared brain-dead on Wednesday morning gave new lease of life to three people.

Following this, her liver went to 61-year-old patient of Global hospital in Parel while one kidney went to Fortis Hospital and the other kidney has been kept with the donor hospital.

The donor was admitted to Saifee Hospital on Monday in an unconscious state and was identified with brain hemorrhage.

Shedding more light on the issue, Dr Shabina Khan, transplant coordinator at Saifee Hospital said, “The woman was brought in a critical condition and we had immediately put her on ventilator support. She was not responding well to the treatment and later her health started deteriorating. She died owing to intracranial hemorrhage and was declared brain-dead on Tuesday.”

Dr Khan further added that after she was declared brain-dead, they started convincing the family relatives and explained to them about the procedure of organ donation.

“During the counseling, we realized that the family was not aware about organ donation which is the major cause for our city to fail in organ donations. But we explained them the whole process and they gave consent for kidneys and livers. The family was very forthcoming and open-minded about organ donation which helped us a lot in carrying out the organ donation.”
