Sindhudurg: A group of schoolgirls in Sindhudurg, fed up of being subjected to the offensive comments of migrant youths in Sindhudurg every day, mustered courage and beat the offenders with the help of local residents on Thursday. Currently, work is underway at the Kudal-Pinguli highway, which is part of the widening project of the Mumbai-Goa highway. The contractor is a company from Madhya Pradesh, Dilip Buildcon and the labour force for this project is also from this state.

These workers would lie in wait for the girls to pass by and harass them. This angered the girls and they complained to their parents. Despite the parents and other locals lodging a complaint with police, no action was forthcoming.  Police failed to show up at the spot in a timely manner, so, taking matters into their own hands, aggrieved residents cornered the workers and thrashed them on Thursday. The girls too joined in, hitting the youth with sticks and slippers. In further protest, they also held up traffic on Mumbai-Goa highway, until the offending workers were arrested.
