Mumbai: It is a shining moment for Maharashtra after the recent dismal showing in the SSC and HSC examinations. Four students from the State are toppers in the IIT-JEE (joint entrance test) 2019. Kartikey Gupta of Ballarpur in Chandrapur district secured the first All India Rank, while Vedant Borkute of Nagpur topped among the ‘handicapped’ under the Other Backward Classes category. Among the girls, Shabnam Sahay of Madhapur topped, ranking 10th, and Tulip Pandey topped from Mumbai, rank 79.

The results of the competitive entrance tests for technical courses were announced by Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, on Friday. But students were unable to check their marks as the official website failed to load. Kartikey obtained 346 marks out of 372. He recounted: "I studied every day. I want to pursue engineering from IIT. I have been preparing for JEE Advanced for the last two years." Shabnam, who scored 308 out of 372 and topped among girls at the national level, had a similar story. I slogged daily as I wanted to do well, she said.

Vedant was born with only one functioning eye and has undergone several surgeries but this did not, in any way, deter him from charting out his vision for the future. Tulip, who is from Bihar, had a tough time preparing for her tests as her family was constantly relocating, in keeping with her father's job. She said, "We had to shift base to Mumbai as my father got a new posting. But I remained firm and focused amidst all this movement, using my time to prepare for this test. I want to pursue Computer Science from IIT."

She wants to eventually work as a software researcher for either Google or Microsoft.

Over 1.61 lakh students appeared in both, Papers One and Two, of the JEE Advanced exams this year. Around 38,705 students passed, of which 5,356 were female. A candidate is required to score at least 10 per cent marks in each subject and an aggregate of 30 per cent to pass the examination. JEE Advanced is the second stage of the selection process for various engineering colleges in India. Only the candidates who meet the cut off of the JEE Main examination, progress to the JEE Advanced exam. Of the 11.47 lakh candidates who appeared for the JEE Main this year, 2.45 lakh students qualified for the JEE Advanced but only 1.73 lakh registered for the same.
