Sangli: In a shocking incident, the mother of a one-month-old baby drowned the infant in a bucket of water and then tried to kill herself by jumping into a well in Asangi, Jath taluka. However, she survived, since the well had no water.
Umadi Police have filed an offence of murder and attempt to suicide against the mother, Sangita Bhanudas Garde, 22. When the villagers saw her infant at the edge of the well, they thought the infant may have died of hunger and then saw Sangita, who they pulled out. She was taken to the police station at Umadi, where she confessed to having had drowned her infant. Sangita was married to Bhanudas, over two years ago. She had fallen seriously ill afterwards, which led to fights between the couple. Bhanudas had sent Sangita to her parents since she was seriously ill. After she recovered and returned, Bhanudas would taunt her about her illness.
Early on Thursday morning, Sangita chose the opportunity to sneak out of the house with her baby. She first drowned the baby in a bucket of water and laid it on the edge of the well in a faraway farm and jumped into the well. However, since there was no water in the well, her suicide attempt failed and she stood inside the well till it was daylight. By then, the son of the farm owner went to start the water pump, when he chanced upon the dead infant at the edge of the well. He peeped inside the well to see if there was another body, when he saw Sangita. He called other villagers and with their help, pulled her out of the well and rushed her immediately to the government hospital at Miraj. Sangita revealed the details to the Umdi police who have registered a case of murder and attempted suicide against Sangita.
