Maharashtra: Sangli mother tries to kill self after killing her newborn

Sangli: In ashocking incident, the mother of a one-month-old baby drowned the infant in abucket of water and then tried to kill herself by jumping into a well inAsangi, Jath taluka. However, she survived, since the well had no water.

Umadi Police have filed an offence of murder and attempt tosuicide against the mother, Sangita Bhanudas Garde, 22. When the villagers sawher infant at the edge of the well, they thought the infant may have died ofhunger and then saw Sangita, who they pulled out. She was taken to the policestation at Umadi, where she confessed to having had drowned her infant. Sangitawas married to Bhanudas, over two years ago. She had fallen seriously illafterwards, which led to fights between the couple. Bhanudas had sent Sangitato her parents since she was seriously ill. After she recovered and returned,Bhanudas would taunt her about her illness.

Early on Thursday morning, Sangita chose the opportunity tosneak out of the house with her baby. She first drowned the baby in a bucket ofwater and laid it on the edge of the well in a faraway farm and jumped into thewell. However, since there was no water in the well, her suicide attempt failedand she stood inside the well till it was daylight. By then, the son of thefarm owner went to start the water pump, when he chanced upon the dead infantat the edge of the well. He peeped inside the well to see if there was anotherbody, when he saw Sangita. He called other villagers and with their help,pulled her out of the well and rushed her immediately to the governmenthospital at Miraj. Sangita revealed the details to the Umdi police who haveregistered a case of murder and attempted suicide against Sangita.
