Mumbai: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has decided to withdraw a petition it had filed in the Bombay High Court, challenging the award of 16 per cent reservation to the Maratha community. Imtiyaz Jaleel, the AIMIM legislator from Aurangabad had filed the petition earlier this month.
Jaleel, through his petition, had demanded the revocation of the16 per cent reservation for Marathas announced by the state government. He had also demanded the scrapping of the State Backward Class Commission (SBCC) report. The SBCC had recommended reservation for the Maratha community.
“The situation has changed after the central government announced 10 per cent reservation for the economically weaker sections (EWS) among the non-reserved category. We earnestly hope the Muslim community benefits from this as well. I am withdrawing my petition until there is more clarity on the implementation of the 10 per cent quota,” said Jaleel, speaking in Aurangabad on Tuesday.
However, he said he would reconsider filing the petition if the minority community failed to reap benefits from the 10 per cent reservation for EWS in the general category. Further, said Jaleel, while he had filed the petition to resolve the long-pending issue of Muslim reservation, he was disappointed at the lack of support from Muslim MLAs across parties in the matter.
