Mumbai: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is the first party to hit the ground running when it comes to preparation for assembly elections. On Tuesday, the day after Mumbai voted in the Lok Sabha poll, NCP chief Sharad Pawar was the first to set off on a tour of the drought-stricken districts.

This is being followed up with a review of the party’s readiness for the assembly polls on Saturday, at the Y B Chavan Pratishthan in Mumbai. Pawar has called on party workers and leaders to take stock of the NCP’s strengths and weaknesses in all the assembly constituencies in the state.

“The cadre will have an opportunity to provide feedback on their leaders and the constituency, which will help us understand the ground reality. In the Lok Sabha election, we have allied with the Congress and like-minded political parties. This pattern will be repeated in the state assembly polls,” said a senior NCP leader.

The NCP leaders are expecting their party will win 11 Lok Sabha seats of the total 48 seats in Maharashtra. “We want to maximise this success for assembly elections. Our aim is ensure the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government is ousted,” declared a senior leader.

Before the 2014 assembly polls, the NCP had withdrawn support to the Congress-NCP coalition government and both parties had contested separately. The Congress won 42, while the NCP had won 41 seats. Allies BJP and Shiv Sena too had contested the assembly polls separately. Eventually, the BJP won 123 seats, while the Sena won 63.

At that time, the NCP had pledged unconditional support to the Devendra Fadnavis government, which they have not yet withdrawn. According to a BJP psephologist, of the total of 288 assembly constituencies, the BJP-Sena are in the number one position in 245 seats and in another 36 assembly segments, while the alliance is in second position.

Refuting these claims, the leader of the opposition from the NCP, Dhananjay Munde said, “The ground reality is different and has changed in the last 10 months. The NCP-Congress will again emerge as the ruling alliance after the state assembly polls.”
