Mumbai: Fourteen new mothers, who delivered babies through Caesarean section in the Yeshwantrao Naik Medical College and Hospital in Yavatmal on April 21, have complained of pain at the site of surgical incision and contracted infection. Their story emerged only after relatives began to question hospital authorities why the women continued to be in hospital four weeks after delivery.

Reportedly, when the women complained of pain, doctors reassured them medication would help. The relatives of the women have complained the patients are not receiving proper care at the hospital.

It is shocking enough that 14 women have contracted infection, but instead of treating them properly, the hospital is trying to play games, the families claim. When the issue came to light, news channels went to the hospital to cover the story. However, hospital authorities prevented the journalists from entering the premises with their cameras and also from talking to the relatives of the women patients.

The hospital’s acting presiding officer, Dr Sanjay Bharti said, “We have heard of complaints about the infections and have set up a five-member infection control committee to inquire into the matter. Action will be taken against the guilty. Precautions will be taken to ensure such an incident does not occur again.”
