Maharashtra: 11 arrested for assaulting woman and her friends

Mumbai: The Kolshewadi police in Kalyan have arrested 11 people for attacking a woman and her two male friends. The police said the attack was allegedly after an auto-rickshaw driver molested her.

The police said the 30-year-old woman was traveling in an auto-rickshaw back to her home. She allegedly claimed that the accused asked the mobile number. "I refuse to share. When he started an obscene conversation, I asked him to stop the auto-rickshaw or I would jump. He stopped the auto to give me a slap. Scared, I contacted my friends for help who came from Ulhasnagar," said the woman.

The incident took place late at night on Friday in the jurisdiction of Kolsewadi police station. The video of the public attacking them with a belt went viral. Forcing the police to take action. The Kolshewadi police had registered a case under sections 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), and 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code against 13 people including auto-rickshaw driver and others.

The Koshewadi police said the two friends of the woman were identified as Rahul Gadekar and Bunty Pradhan. The police have registered a case on a complaint by Bunty.

Vivek Pansare, Deputy Commissioner of police, Zone 3, Kalyan confirmed about the case and said, "We have registered a case and have arrested 11 people till now. We are further investigating the matter."

Meanwhile, different political members took up the issue saying the women are unsafe in the city and crimes against women are on the rise.
