Mumbai : In a joint statement, Gopinath Munde, Uddhav Thackeray and Ramdas Athavale of Maha Yuti have warned the Democratic Front government that the alliance leaders will come out on the streets if Raju Shetty, a Member of Parliament and president of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana was arrested.

A constable called Mohan Pawar, who was injured two years ago, died on Monday. Shetty has been charged under Section 302 of the IPC for his murder. The incident happened In 2012, while Raju Shetty and Sadabhau Khot took out a protest march demanding adequate wages  for sugarcane-cutting workers. Shetty and Khot were arrested and this led to a tense situation in the area.

In the violence that followed, Mohan Pawar, the constable,  was injured. In fact, it was the sugarcane farmers who raised a sum of Rs 20,000 for Pawar’s treatment.

In 2013, the government had asked Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana to pay Rs 2.25 crore as penalty for the damage caused due to the agitation.
