Mumbai : Though modern gadgets are useful in modern times, they can also be the cause of death if not used carefully. A 17-year-old girl listening to music on her earphones was run over by a private luxury bus on Monday morning while crossing Dadar TT circle.

Nidhi Shivgovind Pandey, the victim, had just cleared her HSC examination with 85 per cent marks from R A Podar college. She was rushed to Sion hospital where she was declared dead due to grievous head and face injuries.

According to the Matunga police station, the accident took place at around 10 am near the southbound stretch of B A Road at Dadar TT Circle, Dadar (east).

Nidhi was returning home in Dosti Acres at Antop Hill, after attending her fitness session at Mickey Mehta’s 360 Gym. She was crossing the road to get to the bus stop on the other side of B A Road at the time of the incident.

“The victim was hit by a speeding bus after which she was hit by a couple of buses one after the other near the busy junction”, said sub inspector, Manisha Murumkar of Matunga police station.

A motorist informed the police about the accident but no one picked up the victim till the police arrived, said senior inspector Suresh Parab.

Harishchader Argade (49), the driver of the luxury bus, has been arrested  for causing death due to negligence. The bus was carrying a theatre troupe, named Koliban, from Ahmednagar for their show in Mumbai.

During the initial interrogation, the bus driver claimed that the victim was first hit by a BEST bus. The cops have yet to verify this.

Nidhi’s father, a businessman passed away four years ago. She lived with her mother and two brothers and a sister.

In August last year, Omkar Satam (16), a junior college student of Sathaye College, lost his life after he came under a fast moving train while crossing the tracks near Jogeshwari while listening to music on his cellphone. Eyewitnesses present near the spot, heard the motormen of a Virar-bound fast train blowing the horn continuously but the victim was unable to react as he had plugged in his earphones.
