Bhayandar : A fortnight after cops found the body of a 45-year-old woman who had starved to death inside a rented flat apartment in Nallasopara, her husband has finally been nabbed and booked for culpable homicide. According to the police, on July 20, residents of Maheshwari Building in Alkapuri had complained of stench emanating from a locked first floor flat.

The police broke into the flat and recovered the decomposed body of Kiran Rai (45). Investigations revealed that the mentally ill woman stayed with her husband and the couple rarely interacted with neighbours. After autopsy reports revealed that the woman had died of hunger, the police began hunting for her husband Ramesh Rai, who had mysteriously disappeared. Rai was finally nabbed from his native village in Azamgarh on August 3.

After rounds of sustained interrogation, Rai confess-ed that he had locked up his wife unattended before setting off for his village on June 13. He said that he had received a call from his relatives informing him about the serious condition of his minor daughter, who later died, constraining him to stay back in the village. “Despite knowing that his wife’s life was in danger, he stayed back in the village. So, we have arrested him under section 304 of the IPC. He has been remanded to police custody,” said API Sunil Lokhande.
