Mumbai : Justice S C Dharmadhikari of the Bombay High Court on Friday said that poor legal education of country is responsible for many things including the criminal justice system. He was speaking in a seminar organised by Bombay lawyer association. “In foreign countries there is respect for common law. If legal education has not been taken seriously the country is bound to suffer.”

He also recounted his experience of a Supreme Court case and commented that talent has disappeared from bar and court. “I was defending a rape accused. I produced DNA samples supporting my argument. The division bench of the Supreme Court rejected it saying that it’s too complicated as evidence. In the same judgement the court had also said that police has right to beat accused to get the truth out of him. The bench should have been aware that beating an accused is also an offence. Those two judges should impeach for intellectual deficiency” said Jethmalani.
