Mumbai: Expressing disapproval with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks about rift within the Pawar clan, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday said that leaders should refrain from personal attacks in politics. Pawar further said that how Modi can know what was going on in the Pawar family when Modi was addressing the rally in Wardha, around 600 kilometres away from Baramati.

The NCP chief held a number of meetings of party workers in Daund, which forms part of the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. With NCP leader Ajit Pawar busy campaigning for his son, Parth Pawar, in the Maval constituency, Sharad Pawar has been compelled to shoulder the burden of canvassing for the Baramati seat, which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – Shiv Sena combine is determined to wrest from NCP. In yet another jibe at Modi over his Wardha rally address, Pawar said, “It was Modi, who said that I had held his hand during his (Modi) early days in Gujarat politics.

Yet, at Wardha, which is 650-700 km away from Baramati, the PM criticised me and my family by commenting that there was a rift within the Pawar clan.” “I will tell him about my family when I meet him again in Delhi. While my house is full, no one really knows who is in Modi’s family,” the NCP chief said in a humorous rejoinder to PM’s Wardha address.

Pawar also attacked the Devendra Fadnavis government in the state for its indifference to drought and false promises given to the farmers about drought relief measures.  “Elections will come and go but what about the farmers reeling under the drought? It is the first task of the government to take urgent steps to mitigate the problems arising out of drought,” he said.

The NCP supremo observed that the BJP-Sena government had not fulfilled any of the promises on granting a quota to the Dhangar community made at the time of the 2014 general election. According to sources, what compounds the problem for the NCP chief is the fact that senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar is fully occupied with his son Parth’s campaign for the Maval LS constituency.

“Ajit Pawar is focusing his energies to ensure Parth’s victory from the Maval constituency. To this end, a number of NCP corporators from the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad civic body, party legislators from Karjat, Shahapur and adjacent area have been assigned campaign duty in Maval for Parth,” said an NCP legislator, who did not want to be named.

He further observed that as a result, Sharad Pawar has been compelled to shoulder the burden of canvassing for the Baramati LS seat, by holding extensive meetings with party workers.

Supriya Sule, daughter of senior Pawar, is the NCP candidate and is pitted against BJP-Sena candidate Kanchan Kul, a resident of Baramati who hails from Shephered (Dhangar) community. Kul is the wife of Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP) legislator from Daund Rahul Kul. The Mahadev Jankar-led RSP is an ally of the BJP.
