Mumbai: The students of under-graduate (UG) courses in different colleges of the city claim there is a lack of funding for research, analysis, theses and projects. This affects their academic performance and they cannot create international level project work without adequate financial assistance.

Final-year students of courses like engineering, biotechnology, geology, quantum physics, aeronautics and chemistry require funds for their detailed research work. The students revealed they have to repeatedly seek funds and write several applications through their mentors.

Further, sometimes experiments, part of their research work, do not succeed and the funds are lost. Vindhya Agarwal, a student of Bitechnology, said, “We have to conduct several experiments to achieve the final result. For the purpose, we need apparatus and necessary equipment, which requires financial aid. And, if experiments go wrong, then we lose our funding.”

The students of courses such as social work, political science, architecture and communication have to complete their field work and submit reports. Danish Rehman, a student of Community development, said, “We have to complete certain hours of field work and work on community development projects. The projects require government funding or voluntary organisations’ help.”

The authorities managing UG programmes claimed the government, college management, agencies, corporates and independent organisations are responsible for providing the financial assistance.

Commenting on the issue, a senior officer of the state education department, said, “Corprate firms and agencies can provide funds to students for specified research according to industry requirements.

Providing funds is not the sole responsibility of the government. Colleges should propagate and promote areas of interests submitted by students for their projects. It will help attract more agencies to come forward and provide funds.”

The students claim they cannot match international standards if they do not get adequate financial assistance. Kartiki Mahadeo, a student, said, “There is a constant demand for exemplary research analysis which can sustain at the global level. But if we do not get basic funding then it is difficult to come up with unique ideas.”
