“With the objective of tightening security, we will be installing around 500 CCTVs in KEM, Nair and Sion hospital which will improve the   surveillance in the hospital.

Mumbai : With an aim to provide security and curb cases of assault on doctors, the civic body is set to beef up security of city’s three major civic hospitals- KEM, BYL Nair and LTMGH Sion Hospital by installing around 500 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras which will be covering most of the wards, departments and passages of all the floors. The installation of CCTVs will be completed in another 6-12 months which will be under 24×7 surveillance of the security team appointed in each hospital by the BMC.

There have been 15 attacks on resident doctors across the state so far this year, of which two attacks were on resident doctors of KEM and three on doctors of Sion Hospital. Following this, the deans of the three civic hospitals submitted a security audit report stating the requirement of CCTVs in each hospital after a detailed analysis to the additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas. The report was reviewed by the BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta and Srinivas to understand the need of CCTVs, bouncers and other security measures in various departments of each hospital.

Elaborating on the issue, Srinivas said, “We understand the severity of the situation and the unsafe working conditions in the hospital which is posing a threat to all the doctors’ lives. Therefore, with the objective of tightening security, we will be installing around 500 CCTVs in KEM, Nair and Sion hospital which will improve the surveillance in the hospital. All the procedures for the installation have started and half of the CCTVs will be installed by year end and other half will be done in next 6 months.”

The deans of all the three civic hospitals stated that the security audit report was submitted in the month of July to make sure that the process of installing CCTVs in the hospitals is fastened. Dr Suleiman Merchant, dean of Sion Hospital, said, “The report was submitted after a detailed analysis of the need of CCTVs and a lot of meetings had been conducted with MC and AMC regarding the security measures for doctors.”
