KDMC records mere 48% voting, Kolhapur records massive 70%

Candidates fate to be decided today

Mumbai : The Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation elections held on Sunday got mild response with merely 48% voters’ turnout. The 27 rural areas recorded comparatively higher percentage recording 60% voters’ turnout, where voters turned out actively at the polling booths since morning. The polling booths at Kalyan-Dombivali which saw higher turnout in the morning wore a deserted look by afternoon.

In Dombivali while few voting centers gave preference to senior citizens some untoward incidents where recorded in Maharashtra Nagar area where in at St. Mary School many complaints were received against the center’s poor management.

Many complained that they had to wait in long queue for over two hours in severe heat conditions, wherein a female voter collapsed due to scorching heat. While another lady named Vishakha Gharat had an argument with a policeman where she mentioned that she was not guided properly by the polling officials and as a result she had to waste hours in search of correct polling booth, due to which Gharat was not allowed to cast her vote.

Another untoward incident took place in Parthili’s Ward No 54, where a BJP worker after an argument attacked a MNS worker Nitin Palak with a sword. In order to manage the crowd, police resorted to mild lathi charge, fearing the situation shopkeepers closed their shops. In Kalyan, Khadappa area’s Flower Valley Ward No 23, four men were arrested for bogus voting and a complaint has been lodged against them with Mahatma Phule police station.

Out of 122 wards under KDMC, voting was conducted in 117 wards as 2 villages had boycotted the elections and 3 villages elected candidates unopposed. Total 1500 electronic voting machines were allotted and 6060 election officials were on duty. Approximately 1 lakh more male voters cast their votes.

Under tight police security especially in the 54 sensitive wards barring some untoward incidents, the election was held peacefully. The results will be announced on Monday which will decide fate of 750 candidates.
