Mumbai: Singer-actor Karan Oberoi, who was accused of raping and blackmailing an astrologer, approached the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Andheri to file a case against investigating officer, inspector DP Sonawane. In his complaint, Oberoi alleged to frame him, Sonawane submitted a false report during the hearing of the remand application.
According to Oberoi, inspector Sonawane tried to frame him and was biased during the investigation. The complaint was lodged because, Oberoi alleged, Sonawane had filed a false report stating police had not seized his laptop and mobile.
Oberoi’s lawyer Dinesh Tiwari said, “We have filed a criminal complaint against IO Sonawane for submitting a false report against Karan Oberoi in the course of hearing of the remand application. We believe he deliberately tried to frame Karan in an attempt to favour the complainant and is liable to be prosecuted.”
The complaint filed in the court stated the police officer was biased and the investigation was one-sided. Police scrutinised the call data records, the phone’s memory card and photo gallery for any evidences, to which Oberoi had obliged.
“A cellphone facilitates two-way communication. So, one can’t just seize my client’s phone and wait for more than a month to seize the astrologer's. I am trying to get justice,” said Tiwari. When contacted, Shailesh Pasalwad, a senior inspector of Oshiwara police station, said, “Police were not intimated about the matter and no case has been registered yet.”
On May 25, an astrologer had accused actor-singer Karan Oberoi of blackmailing and raping her on the pretext of marriage. Later, she filed an FIR, alleging she was threatened and attacked by two bike-borne men near the Joggers Park in Andheri. During the investigation, it was revealed she had staged the attack to show the Oberoi in a bad light and was subsequently arrested on June 17.
