In an unfortunate incident a 35-year-old woman commuter died after she came under a moving train while trying to catch hold of a man who snatches her phone at Kalwa railway station on Saturday. The woman Vidya Patil, a resident of Dombivali was mother of three daughters all under 10 while the youngest one is just 7 months old. Within 24 hours the Thane Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested the accused Faijal Jamil Shaikh, 31 alias Fajil
According to the police, Patil who works at a private office in Andheri was on her way home when the incident took place. On Saturday evening she boarded a local train from Kurla, as her train reached Kalwa station the accused saw her holding mobile and boarded her ladies compartment. As the train started the accused snatched Patil's phone and tried to escape.
Scuffle broke out between them and in an attempt to slept away the accused pulled the woman, the accused managed to escaped as he landed on platform but woman could not balanced herself and fell as the platform ended and dragged under the wheels, she died on the spot.
Before boarding train Patil had contacted her husband who came to Dombivali station to receive her and was waiting for her to arrive. As she didn't come until 8 pm her husband was kept dialing her but Shaikh switched off her phone immediately after stealing.
"Based on the CCTV footage we managed to identify the accused and arrested near Mumbra railway station on Sunday, he has been arrested under the IPC sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 397 (robbery with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt), "said Nandkumar Khadkikar , senior inspector.
Shaikh who has cases of mobile thefts was produced before the court on Monday which remanded him police custody five days, said police.
