Mumbai : The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is set to invite tenders for the Kalanagar Junction decongestion plan by next month. The plan involves construction of four flyovers and a 300-metre road.
According to MMRDA officials, the recently-constructed Kherwadi flyover has provided some help in tackling the traffic issue, but now their priority is to construct these flyovers at the Kalanagar junction, which sees huge numbers of vehicles especially during peak hours. The worst affected areas are the Sion-Bandra Link Road, BKC and the Western Express Highway stretch going towards Bandra and Mahim.
“Next month, tenders will be issued for the flyovers at Kalanagar junction,” said UPS Madan, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA.
Under this plan, a two-lane 1.8-km flyover is proposed to be built connecting the Bandra-Kurla Complex and the road leading to Bandra Worli Sea Link. Another two-lane flyover is proposed to originate from Sion-Dharavi Link Road and connect to another flyover proposed between BKC and Kherwadi flyover. Also, a 300-metre-long and 12-feet-wide road has been planned from Sion-Dharavi Link Road to the sea link via PWD offices behind Nandadeep Garden.
The total length of this maze of flyovers that is going to crisscross over Kalanagar junction is 5.1 km and is estimated to cost Rs 227 crore.
The flyovers will be constructed in a phased manner to avoid chaos and further traffic jams. However, MMRDA has not yet decided which flyover will be taken up for construction first.
Meanwhile, MMRDA is still awaiting clearance from Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority for the proposed flyover starting from BKC toward Mahim Causeway. “The CRZ approval process will go on simultaneously. Now, the MCZMA wants it to go to the next level—from Environment Impact Assessment to Social Impact Assessment. It will not be an issues; it’s notional,” Madan added.
