Vasai : If you thought that only residential buildings and jewellery shops are soft targets for robbers, think again. A gang of unidentified men robbed tonnes of stainless steel in broad day light from an industrial unit of Vasai last week.

According to the Valiv police, the crime was reported from a steel firm in the Gavrai Pada area of Vasai (East). The miscreants coolly walked into the godown of the unit and managed to escape with 57 bundles of stainless steel material, weighing more than a whooping 19 tonnes. The value of the stolen steel is estimated at Rs 21 lakh. Not ruling out an inside hand into the crime, Senior Police Inspector, Rajendra Mohite said, “Moving such a huge consignment is not a joke, it seems to be a well–planned job.
The miscreants not only rented a fork-lifter to unload the bundles, but had also hired a truck to move out with the stolen booty. Surprisingly, there was no resistance at all.” The police have detained the transporter and the fork-lift operator for questioning. A case under sections 454 and 380 of the IPC has been registered against unidentified people in this connec-
tion. Further investigations
are on.
