Mumbai: With rain god still to come out of its hideout, Mumbaikars are wondering whether Monsoon has now ceased to be a long drawn affair stretching over three months. And will the city from now onwards witness rain for a few days followed by long dry spells? Despite various parts of the city experiencing intermittent showers on Wednesday, the fact of the matter is: there has been a three-week delay in the arrival of the monsoon. The sound of thunder, almost conspiratorial, in the wee hours of Thursday was quite misleading; and the fizz was just not there. This is the longest the city has waited for rains, since 2009.

It is heartening to hear the India Meteorological Department say that there is a possibility of continuous heavy showers in the next 48 hours in the financial capital; however, there was no such activity as late as Thursday evening. Conventional wisdom is that after a lull, rains gradually pick up pace. But, this time -- even though the IMD is still sanguine at the prospect of continuous rain until June 30 – the weatherman expects them to taper off with only sporadic showers in the first week of July. But -– you guessed it, right -- the monsoon will regain its intensity after this period, IMD officials said. The reason for the delay, weathermen say, is because a cyclone in circulation on the southwestern coast of Maharashtra has now moved upwards. In June, Mumbai is expected to receive 493 mm of rain. So far, the Colaba and Santacruz observatories have recorded 178.8 mm 183.6 mm of rainfall, respectively.
