Is employee safety during heavy monsoon employer’s concern?

Mumbai: After a day at work, many people had to fight a battle with rain to reach their homes on Monday night. While these employees risk their lives to reach work and then return homes with much difficulty, the question here is what are employers offering to make these employees feel safe. There are some large and multi-national companies that are checking on the safety of their employees by an automated SMS service, there are others that encourage employees to leave early or offer a pick and drop service (which is again a regular activity). Such services can work in favour of the employer and create job satisfication, said a HR executive. A female employee with Nomura, said, “We get an auto-call which checks if I am safe or not. If I opt for unsafe option, then they message me a helpline number where I can call and share my concern.”

There are some companies that offer pick and drop services and that is critical during such situations, said another employee, Sneha, who works with a multi-national company in Andheri. Another employee who travels from Virar to Parel, who works with a mid-sized company, said, “My company does not offer its employees any special services. However, there is an option to work from home. The minute there is a heavy rain forecast, I opt to work from home.” Abhijit, who is employed with a start-up, stressed, “Being part of a start-up means you already need to stretch yourself. In such situations, the best option for me is to work from home, an option that start-ups encourage.”
