Mumbai : The mortal remains of anti-toll activist Govind Pansare were on Saturday flown to Kolhapur in a chartered flight for the last rites following a post mortem. The veteran CPI leader had succumbed to bullet injuries on Friday night at Breach Candy Hospital where he was flown in from Kolhapur earlier in the day for treatment.

“He passed away at 9.45 pm on Saturday and primary post-mortem reports show that internal bleedings in the lungs was the cause of death. However, he was conscious almost until the end,” informed Dr Tatyarao Lahane, dean of JJ Hospital who had accompanied Pansare to Breach Candy on Friday.

Medical superintendent of Breach Candy hospital Geeta Koppikar also confirmed that Pansare was slipping in and out of consciousness towards the end.

The flight, which carried the body of the veteran to his hometown Kolhapur, took off from Mumbai at 11.40 am on Saturday and reached Kolhapur around 12.30 pm. The 82-year-old, who was in the forefront of the anti-road toll agitation, and his wife Uma were shot by unidentified persons near their house in Kolhapur on Monday when they were returning from their morning walk. The CPI leader had received three gunshot injuries in his neck, armpit and on the right leg near the knee. Police are preparing sketches of the suspects on the basis of information provided by Uma, who is recovering and is now able to speak.
