New system for first class ladies compartments will help save time in opening of doors, trial run expected next week

Mumbai : Taking into account the fast-paced life of Mumbaites, the Western Railway (WR) has improvised on the door closing mechanism for the first class ladies compartments of its local trains to make it more convenient for commuters. A Korean company appointed by the railways have redesigned the software for the automatic door system, ensuring that the doors open as soon as the train reaches a station, without causing delay.

Learning from the short trial runs of automatic door closing system introduced in March, railways have now installed an LED green light above the door. This light will indicate that doors are about to open as the train pulls into a station. The guard of the trains will be able to give a command even before the train has come to a halt. The system will receive the message and the door will open as soon as the trains halt.

Previously, the guard could press the button for doors to open only after the train halted. This would take at least two to three seconds after the train halts, and the sliding of the door would take another 2.5 seconds. Moreover, if the guard happened to press the button to open doors before the train stopped, the entire system would malfunction.  It would delay trains and also make the system impractical during peak hours.

The new system will take care of such problems. There will also be a button for opening doors on both sides simultaneously for those stations which have platforms on both sides.

An official from WR said: “Earlier, when the train halted at Churchgate, the guard would press the button on one side for opening the door on that side and then had to turn to the other side. This made it very problematic. Now there will be a button for opening the doors on both sides simultaneously.”

Chief Public Relations Officer of WR, Sharat Chandrayan, said: “The train with the new door closing technology is ready and a few final touches are to be given. It will be put on tracks for trials in a week’s time.”
