Mumbai: Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport, Ankush Karande, Mahatma Gandhi, Lok Sabha constituencyAnkush Karande (60) is one such former employee of BEST who wants to bring change, and taking inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, he has begun it with himself.

Karande is an Independent candidate contesting from the North Central Mumbai Lok Sabha constituency and is giving a fight to two former Members of Parliament Priya Dutt and Poonam Mahajan. Karande is a retired BEST employee, who lives with a family of 10 members in the slums of Parsiwadi near at Ghatkopar. Like any other citizen, Karande is facing problems of lack of safe drinking water, expensive education and medical facilities.

Worse, the unhygienic condition in their slums with corruption in sewage cleaning and water meters, Karande feels it is time we stopped complaining and started bringing these issues to the mainstream. Karande also believes that the BEST which caters to the Mumbai’s citizens needs to be salvaged. “It’s been nearly two years since I have retired from BEST, but the dues have not yet been cleared.

There are 3,400 employees waiting to get their dues cleared but the management has been indifferent to our problems. Nearly 125 of my BEST colleagues from the Majas depot have each contributed Rs 100 to help me financially. They have expectations from me. If one among them gets power, he can help solve their issues,” said Karande.

Karande alleged that politicians don’t care about the citizens, especially the poor. “They don’t provide free education or free medical care because if everyone is educated, there will be nobody left to hold their party flags and shout slogans for them,” said Karande.

Karande has promised if he wins and goes to Parliament, he will draw only Re one from the salary the MPs get. “I will use the remaining amount for the development of BEST employees and my constituency. We don’t have much funds for campaigning. We are distributing pamphlets and personally visiting people, going door to door for our campaigning,” said Karande.
