Mumbai : Aimed at churning out  a proper scientific and sustainable solution for disposal of  garbage, a team from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) inspected the premises of the defunct solid waste management plan at Dhavgi village near Uttan in Bhayandar.

The inspection followed after standing instructions to the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) by the Bombay High Court to immediately implement proper and scientific disposal of waste and a time-bound programme for shifting the defunct plant from Dhavgi village to the earmarked plot in Sakvar (Vasai) under the supervision of the pollution control board.

Subsequently, the MBMC sought the help of IIT which, after its survey, will now present a suitable technology on the basis of the technical modalities most importantly the geographical location and climatic condition of the region.

Irate over the unbearable stench and consequent health hazards, villagers under the aegis of the Nagri Hakk Sangharsh Samithi (NHSS) had moved the Pune-based Circuit Bench of the NGT, seeking immediate shifting of the plant and illegal dump yard out of the region.

Sensing the gravity of the situation, the NGT not only set an 18-month time frame to shift the plant and till then ensure proper waste disposal but also asked the MBMC to deposit Rs 70 crore in a third party escrow account for not complying with solid waste management norms.

Citing its poor financial health, the MBMC expressed inability to deposit the amount and moved the judiciary. Although it got reprieve on the escrow issue, it has been strictly directed to initiate remedial measures at the earliest.
