Mumbai : The International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS) at Deonar held its 56th Convocation on Monday at its campus. Present at the convocation were Prof. Faujdar Ram, Director of IIPS, Dr Atul Sarma, chairman at the OKD Institute of Social Change and Development in Guwahati, and Dr Ratan Chand, Chief Director at the Ministry of Health and Family Planning, Government of India.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sarma used frequent anecdotes to exhort the importance of population studies for policymakers, especially in education. “Well-educated people increasingly work longer than the less skilled. For example, some 65% of American men aged between 62-74 years with a professional degree are in the workforce, compared with 32% of men with a high-school certificate. This goes to show why we need to research more on population studies for our education system as well as our economic growth”, said Dr Sarma.
Dr Chand emphasised the need for population studies in terms of the nation’s health. A total of 173 students, including classroom and distance programmes, were awarded with degrees/ diplomas in population studies this year.
