Mumbai : It sounds an impossible dream to have to pay only 20 paise for a food item today. But this very thing became an unexpected possibility for hundreds of Mumbaikars on Tuesday at the famous Café Madras.
To celebrate its 75th anniversary, the café charged rates that were on the menu back in 1940, when the eatery was established. Speaking to FPJ, Devrath Kama, co-owner of the café, said: “It was a surprise for our customers. Many ordered their breakfast as usual and were astonished to see the unusual rates they had to pay. For our four well-known items i.e. idli sambar, masala dosa, upma and filter coffee we charged rates applicable 75 years back. It was to celebrate our diamond jubilee.”
Café Madras, which is located at Kings Circle, Matunga, is well known for its south Indian food items and is popular particularly among college students and office goers.
On Tuesday morning, around 7am when customers walked into the café and learnt about the iconic rates for food items such as idli sambar with chutney for 20 paise, upma for 20 paise, masala dosa for 40 paise and filter coffee for 15 paise, the news soon spread on the social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp.
The circulation of the news led to more customers on Tuesday along with café’s regular ones. Many came to celebrate in groups. The celebrations, however, were short lived as the café started charging the usual rates after 12 pm, much to the disappointment of many who were waiting.
