Mumbai: What one is wearing or eating seems to interest some people more than anything else, which is possibly a pointer to their dull and drab existence. Recently, music maestro AR Rahman and his daughter Khatija were at an event to celebrate the musical success of Slumdog Millionaire. Several stars, including Anil Kapoor and Gulzar, were present. Rahman’s daughter Khatija also interviewed her father on stage.
But more than what he had to say, the daughter’s sartorial choice – the unusual dress she was wearing — became a talking point. For the record, his daughter was wearing a sari with a veil, something that seems to have rubbed a lot of people on the wrong side.
Inflicting this dress on her. Sure enough, Rahman hit back in style. He shared a photo of his daughters Khatija, Raheema and wife Sairaa with Nita Ambani. He captioned the photo #freedomtochoose. While Raheema is seen wearing a pink embellished salwar, Khatija wore a burqa. So, while Khatija has her face and head duly covered, Raheema is seen without a veil, with open hair. His wife, Sairaa, is seen in a hijab, just her hair covered, at the event. For those who still did not get the gist, Khatija took to Facebook to address the accusations.
She wrote, “I’m a sane mature adult who knows to make my choices in life. Any human being has a choice to wear or do what he/she wants and that’s what I’ve been doing. Hence, kindly don’t make your own judgements without understanding the exact situation #freedomofchoice.’’ That should silent those who have called Rahman a “hypocrite,” for having “double standards”.
