Mumbai : In yet another blow to Hiranandani Builders, the Bombay High Court turned down the group’s attempts to construct low-cost housing complexes on area originally demarcated for recreational purposes for eight housing colonies in Powai’s Developemnt Area (PDA).
After the high court had issued a stopper notice earlier in 2015, Hiranandani Builders had approached the Division Bench of the Mumbai High Court, appealing against the notice. On April 15, the high court struck down the appeal, stopping all construction.
According to an agreement with MMRDA, Lakeview Developers (Hiranandani Builders) were given an area of 230 acres, falling under the Powai Area Development Scheme, to develop on the condition that they also construct 1,200 Medium Income Group houses (MIG).
When the builders failed to do so, the SC ordered them to first construct these MIG homes before proceeding with other development work. The builders then started construction on an area encircled by the eight housing complexes and marked as ‘recreational area’ in the building plans. Residents claim they were promised this land would have gardens, a recreational centre and a club house.
