Mumbai : The ‘Hindu Colony’ at Dadar would remain a non-hawking zone, minister of state for urban development Dr Ranjit Patil told the Legislative Council on Tuesday.
The Council saw an uproar on Tuesday when members of the house pointed out that Hindu colony – the area that houses Dr B R Ambedkar’s home ‘Rajgriha’ has been reserved as a ‘hawking zone’ under the new Development Plan of the city.
The government was quick enough to announce that the area, which is a non-hawking zone, would remain so.
Anant Gadgil (Congress) and other members had raised the issue via an attention calling notice.
“Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar resided in the colony. Many people visit the house to pay their respects to the great leader. It won’t be appropriate to let the area be crowded by hawkers,” Gadgil pointed out. “The area is a non-hawing zone right now and it would remain so,” the minister assured the house.
