Mumbai : The Government Railway Police (GRP) is all set to put up stickers to help women commuters identify manned coaches from those that are unmanned. This comes after a 22-year-old girl was molested between Grant Road and Charni Road on board an unguarded moving train. The GRP has devised a four-point plan for improving the security of women commuters on board trains and providing last-mile connectivity.

The first step towards enhancing the security for women commuters will be putting up a sticker outside the coaches that will be manned during the night hours. While the Western Railway (WR) has three women commuters in each train, the same does not hold true for trains on Central Railway (CR), which have a varying number of women’s coaches. All the women’s coaches are not manned by constables, who are also facing a shortfall.

During the conference, GRP commissioner Madhukar Pandey said, “A person who comes to the city from outside the state or the country will not be able to distinguish a manned coach from an unmanned coach like a regular commuter would. Considering these aspects, these stickers will be placed outside each coach that will be manned, helping them to identify it.”

If at all a commuter boards a compartment that is expected to be manned only to find that the constable is missing, they can then alert the GRP using a helpline number. For displaying this helpline number, another sticker will be placed within these coaches. There will also be a team of 50 constables reserved to attend these calls from women commuters. There will be two constables deployed in each railway police station. Pandey further explained that following the call, the GRP constable will be sent to the compartment as soon as the train reaches the next station and the response time to such calls might vary from 5 minutes to 10 minutes.

GRP approaches IIT-B

The GRP, which is faced with a staff crunch after being given the task of improving the security of women on board a train, has now approached IIT Bombay for help. GRP commissioner Madhukar Pandey said, “We have approached IIT Bombay to study our deployment process and help us in improving it by their ways and means.” He further added that project is at a nascent stage and that it will be implemented as soon as they have concrete plans.
