An NGO from Vidarbha levels allegation

Mumbai : Gosikhurd irrigation project in Vidarbha is delayed due to the government’s lethargic attitude. The government is not taking action against corrupt officials and contractors due to which work on the project is not moving forward, alleged Jan Mach, a non-government organisation working for irrigation development in Vidharbha.

“The dam is constructed on river Vainganga (Bhandara) and supposed to irrigate over 64,365 hectare farmland in the Vidarbha region. In 2015, condition of the dam and its canals is very bad as walls have developed cracks, work has been abandoned for want of funds. Currently, water flows only up to 30 km as against planned distance of 99.53 km irrigating only 1,420 hectares of land. Reluctance of villagers on giving away their land to build arterial network of canals is also a major reason for hampering irrigation,” alleged Anil Kishor, chairman of the Jan Manch.

“We have pointed the faulty work of the dam to the authorities. We even filed complaints with them but nobody is listening to us. The government is not initiating action against corrupt officers and contractors involved in the work,” he added.

“If government wants to stop suicides of farmers in Vidarbha, the project should be completed in time. We also demand that the Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC) shall immediately initiate action against officials,” said Kilor.
