Mumbai : Don’t be surprised if you see Govindas with brooms in their hands on the occasion of ‘Dahi Handi’ festival as Mumbai Dabbawalas’ Govinda pathak (team) will clean garbage created during the celebration. It is to be mentioned here that the Dabbawalas are appointed as ‘Ambassador of Clean India Campaign’ by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Dahi Handi is one of the famous festivals in Mumbai celebrated on the occasion of Janmashtami, a birthday celebration of Lord Krishna. This year, it falls on September 5.

Mumbai Dabbawalas who have been ferrying food and rich traditions and cultural heritage, decided to celebrate this Dahi Handi bit differently. Besides making human pyramids and breaking handis, they will get the brooms and clean the area before and after the Dahi Handi.

Dabbewala union president Bahusaheb Karavande said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed our union as an Ambassador for Clean India initiative. So, it is our moral responsibility to be worthy of the responsibility.”

He added, “As part of it, our Govindas will take broom with them and clean the garbage on the auspicious occasion of Dahi Handi. Besides celebration it will also be a constructive work.” He appealed to the people that this movement is not restricted with Prime Minister or Dabbawalas but belongs to every Indian citizen.
