The project is likely to cost Rs 1,300 crore

Mumbai : The BMC has decided to construct the much awaited Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) in three phases over the next three years, which includes a Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Nahur and a six or ten kilometre long tunnel under the film city near Aarey Colony. The third stage will involve widening of Gen A.K. Vaidya Road.

Official sources informed that the real challenge in completing the road is the construction of the tunnel underneath film city and along Vihar Lake. The civic body has planned to construct two tunnels, for traffic towards and from Mulund, instead of a single tunnel with two way traffic. This is expected to double the time required for completing the tunnel. Construction of the tunnel is expected to cost the civic body Rs 4 lakh to Rs 6 lakh per metre of digging underground.

Official sources said, “As this is a forest area, there are a lot of restrictions on the construction. In any other case, we would have started digging both tunnels at the same time, one from either end. This would have halved the construction time. Now, we will do one tunnel at a time, and each will have the width of two lanes. Thus, the time required will be doubled.”

Meanwhile, the other phases of a ROB at Nahur and widening of the A.K Vaidya Road is a continuous process, the official informed. The civic body is yet to come up with a time line for completing each of the three phases. It has also not decided the cost-wise break up of each phase, while the total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs 1,300 crore.
