Mumbai : There is good news pouring in for Mumbaikars since the recent heavy rainfall will reduce water cuts. Significant rain in the catchment areas has caused the Modak Sagar dam to overflow and others are likely to follow suit soon.
Modak Sagar, which contributes about 10 percent of Mumbai’s water needs, has become the first major lake and the second of seven lakes to overflow. Other lakes, such as the Tulsi Tansa and Vihar lakes, are almost at the overflow level and the lake at Upper Vaitarna is 3 m below its overflow level.
A good 24-hour spell of rain on September 18 to 20 alone has added 21 days worth of water. The rain added about 81thousand million litres of water in the lakes. The civic body had imposed a 20-percent water cut due to the poor monsoon in catchment areas. According to the weather bureau’s predictions, heavy rains are expected over the next 48 hours.
Currently, the seven lakes have 10,75,000 million litres of water stock, and the city needs 14,45,000 million litres of water stock for the year. The BMC will monitor the stock and review the same to lift the water cuts by the end of the month.
