Mumbai : Monsoon in Mumbai is likely to get stronger and the city may experience heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, a senior MeT official said here on Thursday.

“Typhoon Neoguri that was active in the Pacific region over the last few days crossed Japan on Wednesday. The typhoon was pulling away moisture which decreased the intensity of rainfall here. The outshore trough now developed here has activated monsoon in Maharashtra and parts of Konkan region,” said V K Rajeev, Director General, Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai.

Earlier in the day, heavy rain led to water logging in low-lying areas in merely two hours which disrupted road as well as train services.

Fortunately, it did not coincide with the high tide. But if it rains heavily on Friday morning, as is predicted, the city could get flooded as there is a 4.34 m high tide at 10.24 am.

South Mumbai received particularly heavy showers with Colaba alone receiving a total of 111.4 mm of rainfall in merely 24 hours while the suburbs received only 49.1mm. The BMC’s automatic weather station showed that Nariman Point region alone received 30.71 mm while Parel-Dadar received 33 mm between 8 am to 4 pm.

Water-logging was reported for the second consecutive day in the low-lying areas of Parel, Chembur, Hindmata, Elphinstone and Sion. Streets were flooded in two hours of heavy showers between 12 pm to 2 pm. While the water receded as the day passed the traffic still moved at a snail’s pace with checks at various places. Following the low intensity explosion in Pune, checks were made at various points in the city, which further delayed the traffic. During the evening peak hours, slow moving traffic was reported in Western Mumbai between Kala Nagar to Airport in Andheri. In south Mumbai, traffic jams were reported between Haji Ali and Mahalakshmi Mandir Junction.

Services on the Central Railway were the worst-affected, since the morning peak hours. A wall adjoining platform no.1 collapsed at Sandhurst Road station at 7 am disrupting services during the morning peak hours. Trains moving on the down line were stuck from 7 am to 7:50 am. Three other trains were held back on the up line while another five trains had to be diverted on the slow track to avoid bunching of trains. Following the wall collapse, water-logging was reported on the tracks at Vikhroli and Bhandup due to which services were running 15 to 20 minutes late.

Following the wall collapse, a track fracture was detected between Badlapur and Ambernath at 8:50 am, which caused trains to move with a speed restriction. A total of 23 trees were uprooted due to the heavy showers 5 of them were reported in the Island City. Another 7 were uprooted in the Eastern suburbs while 11 in the western suburbs but no injuries were reported. Heavy rains for the next 24 hours in some parts of the city has been predicted by IMD.
