Mumbai : With an aim to remove social stigma and taboo about the disease, resident doctors across civic hospitals have launched an HIV Awareness Week campaign wherein they will encourage couples to get HIV tested rather than matching their kundalis first under the theme ‘HIV testing primary, kundali matching secondary’.

This has come with an aim to ensure that both are free of any sexually transmitted disease so that none of them contracts the disease. Further, if anyone is tested positive then immediate treatment can be provided.

The campaign will also be clearing myths about HIV wherein there are only three ways of transmission including sexual intercourse, mother to child transmission and blood transfusion.

Dr Sagar Mundada, president of Central MARD, said: “All patients coming to hospitals between 15 to 25 years will be given sex-cum-reproductive education for the entire next week irrespective of the complaint they have come for. This is extremely necessary since a majority of people in India suffering from HIV are in the age group of 17 to 25.”

“We will encourage young couples to test for HIV rather than matching kundali and further resident doctors and Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) members will take pledge that they will lead the way by testing themselves before marriage,” he said.

Further, they will educate doctors in the hospital that the HIV treatment protocols have been recently changed by World Health Organization (WHO) recently as many are still unaware about how treatment is recommended right from the earliest stage.

“HIV testing is crucial for couples as there are chances of contracting the virus if anyone has already contracted the disease. Therefore, these tests will ensure safety and save people’s lives,” added Dr Mundada.
