Bhayandar: The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) is drawing flak for flouting solid waste management rules by transporting waste in rickety trucks leaving a stinking trail of filth and leachate water on roads thus causing miseries to the pedestrians and motorists in the twin-city. It should be noted that the MBMC had inked a five year contract with Global Waste Management Company in 2012, to lift garbage from the twin-city and ferry it to the waste processing unit at Dhavgi village in Uttan near Bhayandar. While the agency has been on-extension mode since the expiry of the tender in 2017, the actual ground work is being done by local sub-contractors who claim to have deployed 79 compactor vehicles.

However, thanks to a blind eye turned towards regular service and maintenance by the contractors, most of the vehicles are in sorry condition, crying for repairs for the past couple of years. “Instead of lifting garbage and cleaning the area these ill-maintained trucks spill filth which stagnate on roads leaving the area stinking for hours, posing a health hazard,” said a resident. Residents of Balaji Nagar have brought the matter to the notice of senior officials who assured them of resolving the issue. However, nothing had had been done to mitigate their sufferings so far. Apart from 8 to 10 tonnes of industrial and biomedical waste, the twin-city generates around 500 metric tonnes of garbage every day.
