Mumbai : In a significant development, the accused in the Mumbai gang rape case have admitted to having earlier committed two rapes and a molestation inside the deserted Shakti Mills compound, investigators said on Tuesday.

“The accused had confessed that they had raped a rag picker, a commercial sex worker and molested a girl who had come to the Shakti Mills compound for privacy,” said an officer investigating the case. However these crime were not recorded, as the victims did not file police complaints. The cops believe that their case will become stronger if the victims approach the police.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Crime Branch officials have found another witness in the case , who heard the telephonic calls of one of the accused when they were informed about the victim’s

presence in Shakti Mills compound. The officials believe the testimony of the witness can help them build a watertight case.

According to a Crime Branch officer, Chand, Siraj and Qasim Bengali were playing cards in a different location on Thursday evening while Vijay Jadhav and Salim were present at Shakti Mills, the place where the whole incident took place.

The police say that the witness informed them that, Salim called Bengali after he spotted the 22-year-old photojournalist and her male colleague shooting in the compound. Soon after the call, the trio accused who were playing cards left the spot and went to Shakti Mills, said a source from crime branch.

“We will record the statement of the witness and the call data records will prove whether there was a communication between the two”, source added.

While interrogation the cops had found that Kasim had also his phone to another person who resold it to someone else.

“The first buyer had been identified and we will trace the phone from the new owner. The photographs of the victim that were clicked might be probably deleted but we will retrieve it by using data recovery technologies”, added the officer. So far the cops have recovered four phones and only Kasim’s mobile is to be traced, officer added.
