Mumbai: Ganesh Chaturthi is being celebrated with great enthusiasm and zeal all over the city. Every year, mandals highlight social issues to spread awareness among people. This year, potholes on Mumbai roads have been on the minds of many mandals and they have supported the initiative spearheaded by Navin Lade, who hopes to get Mumbai’s name in the record books as the city with the most potholes.

A Mumbaikar and general secretary of the employment wing of the Republican Party of Indian (RPI), Lade is on a mission to get Mumbai’s name entered in the Book of Records as ‘Mumbai — The City with the Most Number of Potholes’. He feels the infamous record will shame the civic body into doing its job. “Mumbai is plagued with potholes that have taken several lives and injured innumerable people. Many people have come forward to help and it’s a good feeling to see Ganesh mandals coming to our aid as well,” said Lade.

City Ganesh mandals have supported Lade and have collectively focused on the theme of Mumbai potholes. A housing society complex in Andheri (E) was one of the first to extend support to Lade. The theme of the decoration of Rising Star society is ‘Mumbai’s Potholes Towards Record Book’. Other societies supporting Lade’s initiative are Bal Gopal Mitra Mandal in Prakashwadi, Andheri, Ekdant Mitra Mandal, Annawadi Ekta Sangh Bal Mitra Mandal and Panchashil Seva Sangh. “Our society had organised a drawing competition on the topic of potholes on the second day and it went well. Even children could relate to the (pothole) problem. Next, we have also decided to perform a skit on the same issue in the coming days,” said Sanjay Patil of Ekdant Mitra Mandal.
