Mumbai : The state has witnessed a sharp rise in the number of SSC students who scored over 90 per cent, as has the Mumbai division. Education experts now say that this increase in the number of students scoring more than 90 per cent will proportionately push up the cut-off marks required for admission into junior colleges.

Overall, an estimated 48,583 students have scored over 90 per cent in the state, whereas last year only 40,797 students had scored above 90 per cent. The Mumbai division, this year, registered a rise of 5.1 per cent to 12,100 from 11,509 in 2014.

In the same way, the CBSE, ICSE, IB and IGCSE boards also witnessed a general increase in the number of students who scored above 90 per cent this year. The education experts thus think that, this year, the cut-off marks will be really high. Last year, the average cut-off for major colleges in Mumbai was between 80 per cent and 91 per cent. This year, it is going to more than that after the number of students scoring over 90 per cent has increased.

The principal of Vivekanand Education Society, Chembur, Bina Gole, said, “In my college and in general across the city, the number of students who’ve got 90 per cent or more has increased. In the same way, CBSE, ICSE and IB students have also scored more marks. So, naturally, the cut-off will be higher proportionately.”
