The Maharashtra Government on Friday faced a major embarrassment, after the Pune Police arrested the commissioner of Maharashtra State Council of Examination, Tukaram Supe, in connection with alleged malpractices in the Teachers' Eligibility Test (TET).

The arrest has come on the heels of Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad cancelling the MHADA recruitment examination, following a tip-off about paper leak and the subsequent arrest of six persons.

"Tukaram Supe, the commissioner of MSCE, was arrested by the cyber cell of Pune police following his questioning," Pune police commissioner Amitabh Gupta said. The alleged malpractice in the Teachers' Eligibility Test came to light during the investigation of the paper leak in the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) examination. The police have recovered Rs 88 lakh cash from Supe’s house.

About ten lakh candidates appeared for the TET exam. It is alleged that the fraud committed was worth Rs 4.25 crore, and that candidates were asked to pay Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh for clearing the exam.

School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad has constituted a committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary Vandana Krishna to probe the alleged corruption in the TET.

‘‘Following reports of wrongdoing in the TET exams, I held a meeting with department officials. We won't tolerate anyone playing with the future of children and teachers. I have ordered an inquiry headed by the Additional Chief Secretary (School Education),’’ she said.

‘‘Anyone found guilty of wrongdoing will be punished. The department is co-operating with the agencies in the investigation,’’ she added.

The teachers’ eligibility test was conducted on November 21, 2021. The provisional answer key was released on the official website for Paper I and Paper II -- Maths, Science and Social Science -- on December 3, 2021. Candidates who were not satisfied with the provisional answer key had an option of raising objections by December 8, 2021.

The Maha TET exam was earlier scheduled in October but was later postponed due to the Deglur-Biloli Vidhan Sabha Constituency by-elections. The final answer key has not been released yet. It will be prepared on the basis of objections raised by the candidates. Once the final answer key is released, candidates will be able to calculate their marks.

The final results will be prepared on the basis of the final key. However, no official dates have been announced yet. Candidates are advised to keep a check on the official website for being updated.
