Mumbai: Passwords have existed ever since the computer era began and they perform their duty diligently, unless we as users commit certain mistakes. Nowadays, most websites ask the users to mix or have a combination of different characters to create a stronger password, but human error and its predictability puts everything at risk. In the online space, nothing is completely safe as there are always flaws to be exploited, but certainly there are certain concrete ways to minimize the risk.

Let's have a look at the figures of how a bad password could pose a risk.

According to the figures, A simple, weak, reused password is the reason behind the majority of hacking-based breaches. 34% uses a single password for different domains. 26% write them down on paper. 17% type them on their computer or phone. 6% use well-known passwords One should never create passwords that are easy to guess, or that are found in the dictionary as these are easy to hack with the software programs. Do not use passwords that include your personal information such as name, date of birth, age, place, profession, mobile number etc. Passwords that follow the pattern such as 123456 or qwerty123456 or abcd1234 are extremely easy to guess as well as to hack.

Passwords, such as itssummertime, contain words that are found in the dictionary and hence can be hacked within minutes of using a dictionary attack. Such passwords should be avoided. Hence it's better to create passwords in your mother tongue or regional language. A vast majority of the people end up reusing the same password in different or multiple websites. In such scenarios, the secrecy is in danger, and might expose a plethora of leaks. It is critical as sensitive information like phone numbers, home addresses and credit card details can be deciphered.

According to some experts, the best way to secure passwords of your online account is to use password managers. These password managers help you to generate passwords which are stronger and randomized, they act as a centralized hub for storing passwords. While using the password managers, you just have to remember one password of the password manager. After logging in, the password manager does the rest, filling up the password, auto filing and the other details of log-in screen.
