Thane: A portion of a footpath adjacent to a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project in Wagle Estate caved in on Friday night, damaging three vehicles parked there. Two cars and an autorickshaw fell into a 20-ft sinkhole dug by the contractor of the adjoining SRA project. However, no casualties and injuries were reported. The incident occurred at Ramchandra Nagar, near Rajmudra society in Thane at 11.30pm on Friday. A team of the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation managed to pulled out all three vehicles within two hours.

It is likely the cave-in may have been caused by the sinkhole in its proximity. However, authorities suspect the incident was a fallout of the inferior quality of road construction.

Santosh Kadam, chief officer, RDMC said,"We received a call about the footpath cave-in near Kamgar Hospital, Rajmudra society, around 11.30pm, after which our personnel were rushed to the spot, along with one fire tender, one rescue vehicle and one JCB. Nobody was injured in the incident, but two cars and an autorickshaw parked there fell off the road when a section of it caved in."

Sandeep Malvi, public relations officer, Thane Municipal Corporation said, "We, along with our officials, rushed to the spot and conducted a check. We are trying to ascertain the cause of the cave-in. Our priority is to repair the damaged footpath." The affected stretch has been immediately taken up for repairs and further investigations are on, said civic officials. Following the incident, residents have now begun to question the quality of work of the SRA contractor. ‘‘How can a footpath suddenly sink into an SRA project dug hole? What if there were more vehicles parked on the footpath. The concerned department should have taken adequate measures,’’ said a local.
