Taloja police have registered an FIR against the contractor for negligence after four labourers died at CIDCO's Housing project site at Taloja phase 2 on Tuesday evening after the lift carrying construction material came crashing down. Two labourers were also injured in the accident and their condition is stable.

Jitendra Sonawane, a senior police inspector from Taloja police station said that they have registered a case and started the investigation. “Prima facie it seems a case of negligence and an investigation is already underway,” said Sonwane. He added that after the incident, he had seen labourers wearing protective gear. “It seems that the impact of lift crashing was so high that protective gear was not sufficient to protect them,” said Sonawane.

According to police, the lift operator Anewad was locking the lift on the 14th floor when it came crashing down. The structure holding the lift or the scaffolding also came crashing down. A car parked near the site came under it and the sub-contractor sitting inside the vehicle also died.

The deceased were identified as Maruti Anewad,40, the lift operator, Prakash Pawde,48, a sub-contractor, and two workers Gangaram Ravidas, 22, and Pankaj Bhimray, 25. Two injured have been identified as Sakire Alam,25, and Mohammed Sajaat Ali,22.

Meanwhile, the case has been registered against the contractor under sections 304, 204, and 279 of IPC.

CIDCO had already directed the Shirke Construction Company to give compensation of Rs. 7 lakhs to the families of the deceased and 2 lakhs for the injured and their all medical expenses. CIDCO will conduct a detailed examination and will take necessary action.
